Message from the Principle Secretary
I take this opportunity to thank Smart Mice Ltd for organizing The Africa Travel Show 2015 at a time when Kenya is facing a down turn in the Tourism sector. Tourism is a key source of foreign exchange and has recently been adversely affected by various external factors. Among these are perceived insecurity, travel advisories especially those affecting key markers as well as the Ebola outbreak towards the end of last year. The organizers of The Africa Travel Show have made every effort to showcase Kenya as a destination by getting together private sector exhibitors as well as targeting the regions to keep the destination alive in the minds of travelers. We as a country need to promote Kenya to the rest of the world, it is safe to travel to Kenya and indeed it is a country that many are eager to visit.
The ministry is keen to support such initiatives made by the private sector and leverage on these to share information on the destination with a view of enhancing destination confidence to the domestic, regional and international tourists. The key mandate of the Ministry’s department of Commerce and Tourism is to guide policy in the two areas and in particular in tourism to support strategic initiatives that market Kenya as a preferred tourism destination.
To achieve the noble objective of marketing Kenya as the preferred tourism destination of choice, the Ministry in collaboration with the key public and private sector stakeholders has initiated a number of activities aimed at ensuring tourism recovery and rebranding. These include developing digital global media strategy, engaging the key stakeholders, managing crisis, strategic alignment campaign and branding destination. The Ministry has also undertaken to develop tourism niche products under Vision 2030 second Medium Term Plan 2013-2017 by embracing home stays, cultural tourism, and agro-tourism among others.
The Ministry acknowledges the enormous potential the country offers through varied tourism products ranging from Culture, Wildlife, adventure, beach, sports tourism, MICE among others. At the backdrop of this, we wish to congratulate the organizers; Smart Mice Limited of the Africa Travel Show for coming up with this timely concept to showcase Kenya.
